This 3-night fly-in safari from Doro Nawas airstrip takes you to the phenomenal Serra Cafema Camp in the Hartmann's Valley region alongside the Kunene River in northern Namibia.

Safari starts and ends at Doro Nawas airstrip.

  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THIS TRIP

Set under verdant trees on the banks of the Kunene River, Serra Cafema is one of the most remote camps in southern Africa. Guests can truly disconnect, unwind and relax to the sound of rushing water, and explore one of the driest deserts in the world. Respectful interaction with the semi-nomadic Himba community, fascinating nature walks, boating (water levels permitting), and low-impact guided quad-bike excursions complete the experience.

The eight chalets are set on elevated decks and crafted in wood, canvas and thatch to create a unique camp that is at one with its surroundings and celebrates the culture of the Himba people. The Ozonganda (Herero, meaning “main area”) affords spectacular views over the Kunene River.

We have a mutually-beneficial partnership with the Marienfluss Conservancy, which is owned primarily by the Himba people, the benefits of which include lease fees, employment and skills transfer.

  • CONSERVATION

    Crocodile Research

This two-pronged project aims, firstly, to establish a population estimate of the crocodiles on the stretch of Kunene above and below Serra Cafema Camp. The second aspect is a joint DNA project between Wilderness Safaris, the University of Stellenbosch and the Namibian Ministry of Environment and Tourism, looking at the genetics of the Nile crocodiles across Namibia, from the Kunene to the Zambezi.

    Namibia Sea Turtle Project

Just north of the Kunene River mouth, a host of sea turtles annually nests on Angolan beaches where they are vulnerable to slaughter by local fishermen. To this end, Wilderness Safaris is involved in a conservation initiative with the aim of securing nesting beaches in southern Angola, and monitoring the turtles when they are in Namibian waters.

    Marienfluss Conservancy & Himba

With the utmost respect for the Himba peoples and culture, Serra Cafema has been able to establish excellent relationships with the Himba when they move into the area and stay for a while in one of their village sites. Guests are able to experience traditional Himba culture in a respectful interaction to the benefit of all.
