Battlefields & Bush
If you are remotely interested in War and history, then a trip to the Kwazulu Natal battlefields is the way to go.
I recently took a trip to Three Tree Hill at Spionkop to soak up some history and naturally do some game viewing at the same time. This lovely, eco-friendly lodge is set against the magnificent backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa, and overlook the secluded Mfazimnyama Valley of the Spioenkop Game Reserve. The Lodge boasts a handful of hiking trails and offers guided walks into the neighboring Spieonkop Nature reserve. However, the guided day tour of the battlefield is a must!
Our guides ability to tell the story of the events that took place at the Battle of Spionkop, fought on the 23rd and 24th of January 1900, was totally enthralling. Interestingly, many football grounds in England have a stand in their stadia named "Kop" or "Spion Kop" because of the steep nature of the terracing, heralding back to this battlefield, the most famous being that at Liverpool FC's Anfield stadium. Spionkop also offers a panoramic view of the entire Northern and Central Drakensberg making the views from this world heritage site at sunset breathtaking.
We left with a greater understanding of the history of our country and that refreshed feeling you get when you spend time in nature - can't wait to take my family there, I know my dad will love it!
