SERENGETI
The Serengeti ecosystem is a geographical region in northern Tanzania, bordering Kenya, Lake Victoria, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It’s also a UNESCO-listed World Heritage national park that offers year-round safari adventures.
The Great Migration
The Serengeti is synonymous with the Great Migration, an annual odyssey undertaken by millions of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle in search of fresh grazing lands. This epic journey through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is a natural wonder, attracting wildlife enthusiasts from around the world. While the exact timing of the migration varies, the general pattern involves a clockwise movement, with the herds typically crossing the Mara River into Kenya between July and September.
Wildlife Paradise
Beyond the migration, the Serengeti boasts an incredible array of wildlife. The Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino (although sightings of the latter are rare) – are all present, along with a plethora of other species. Cheetah, hyena, jackal, and warthog are common sights, while the Grumeti and Mara Rivers are home to hippos and crocodiles. The park’s diverse ecosystem supports a wide range of antelope species, from the graceful impala to the imposing eland.
Stunning Landscapes
The Serengeti’s vast, open plains, punctuated by rocky outcrops known as kopjes, create a breathtaking landscape. The Western Corridor, following the Grumeti and Mbalageti Rivers, offers a different scenery with riverine forests and lush vegetation. The Lobo Hills, characterized by their granite boulders, provide a dramatic contrast to the open plains.
Safari Activities
Game drives are the cornerstone of any Serengeti safari. Morning and afternoon game drives offer ample opportunities to spot wildlife, while full-day safaris with picnic lunches allow for extended exploration. For a truly unforgettable experience, consider a hot air balloon safari, providing a bird’s-eye view of the vast plains. Night drives and guided walking safaris offer additional opportunities to encounter nocturnal creatures.
Best Time to Visit
The Serengeti can be enjoyed year-round, but certain periods offer specific advantages. The dry season (June to October) is generally considered the best time for game viewing as wildlife congregates around water sources. The Great Migration is most spectacular between July and September, with the river crossings being a highlight. The calving season for wildebeest occurs in the Ndutu area in January and February.
While the wet season (November to May) brings lush landscapes, it can also bring rain and challenging road conditions. However, this period offers a quieter and more affordable safari experience.
